What Parents Are Really Asking

Families who search for the best boarding schools in Dehradun are usually not looking for a ranking. They are asking a smaller, harder set of questions: will my child be safe when I am four hundred kilometres away, will the teaching be good enough for the board exams ahead, who looks after a child who falls ill or feels homesick, and will the fees be exactly what we were told they would be?

No list can answer those questions for you, because the answers depend on your child. What a list can do is give you a consistent way to compare schools, so that a well-produced brochure does not end up outweighing a plain fact. That is what this page is for.

Below are eight things worth checking at any residential school, followed by how Doon Global School answers each of them. Take the same eight questions to every campus you visit. If you would like the full picture of daily life here first, read our detailed guide to the boarding school in Dehradun.

Eight Things to Check Before You Choose

These are the areas where schools genuinely differ, and where a straight answer tells you a great deal.

Board Affiliation and Disclosure

Ask for the affiliation number and school code, not just the name of the board. A school comfortable with scrutiny publishes its full public disclosure openly: affiliation certificate, staff list, land and building documents, and the fee structure. If you have to request these privately, that itself is information.

Teacher-Student Ratio

The ratio matters more in a residential school than a day school, because teachers are present beyond class hours as well. Ask for the number of teachers actually on the rolls, the split between PGT, TGT and PRT, and how many children sit in a typical classroom in your child's grade.

Safety Infrastructure

Look past the word secure. Ask how many cameras there are and who watches the feed, whether entry is controlled biometrically, what fire equipment is installed and how often drills are actually held. Ask whether safety audits are internal only, or whether an outside agency also inspects.

Pastoral Care

Boarding is as much about care as it is about classes. Ask who a child goes to when unwell or unsettled, how parents are notified, which emergency-referral process currently applies and how child-protection concerns are reported and escalated.

Fee Transparency

You should be able to see a full year on a single page: term fees, one-time charges, which amounts are refundable, and what an imprest or expense account is meant to cover. Vague answers at the enquiry stage tend to become unwelcome surprises in the middle of a session.

Sports and Activities

Ask whether coaching is professional or handled by whoever is free, and what a child who is not sporty does instead. Music, theatre, debate, art, robotics, NCC and NSS all count. In a residential school the evenings and weekends are the programme, not an extra.

Campus and Laboratories

Ask for campus area in square metres, the number of classrooms and their size, how many laboratories there are, and how many toilets serve girls and boys. Every CBSE school records these figures, which makes them the fairest way to compare two campuses honestly.

Admission Process

A clearly defined process protects the family as much as the school. Ask how many steps there are, whether an entrance assessment applies to your child's grade, whether you will meet the Principal before deciding, and what happens to the amounts you have paid if plans change.

  • May I see the CBSE affiliation certificate, and where is your mandatory public disclosure published?
  • How many teachers are currently on the rolls, and how many children will sit in my child's classroom?
  • How many CCTV cameras cover the campus, who watches the feed, and does any outside agency audit safety?
  • Who does a boarder turn to when unwell or unsettled, and what medical support is available on site?
  • Is there a written child protection policy with a named officer, and how is bullying dealt with?
  • May I have the complete fee schedule in writing, including one-time charges and which amounts are refundable?
  • What do children do between the end of the school day and bedtime, and which activities have professional coaching?
  • What is the admission process from enquiry to joining, and is there an entrance assessment for this grade?

If a school answers all eight plainly, you have enough to decide. If the answers arrive as generalities, ask again in writing before you pay anything.
