A residential school reshapes family life before it changes anything about a child's marks. The child learns to manage a timetable, a wardrobe and a disagreement with a friend without a parent in the next room. The family gives up the small daily readings - the mood at dinner, the sigh over a mathematics problem - and learns to trust other adults with them. That is a real cost, and it deserves naming before anyone discusses facilities. What returns is a settled routine and a child who grows more capable of running their own day.

Doon Global School is a co-educational, CBSE-affiliated school at the 14th Milestone, Chakrata Road, Jhajra, Dehradun 248015, founded in 1998 and teaching from Nursery to Grade XII under Affiliation No. 3530108 and School Code 81149. Residence begins at Grade 3 and runs to Grade XII. The campus covers 26,510 square metres, with 32 classrooms and seven laboratories including computer labs. The May 2026 disclosure lists 44 teachers and Principal Cdr Monika Pande's qualifications as MSc, BEd.

This page is for families weighing residential schools in Dehradun rather than reading about boarding in the abstract: who residence suits, what the school becomes responsible for, what the fees come to and how to see the place yourself. Our guide to boarding at Doon Global School covers hostel life, and the shortlisting checklist helps when comparing campuses.

Is residence right for your child?

It suits some families very well and others badly. Better to know which, early.

These lists come from the questions our admissions office is actually asked, and from what tends to separate a child who settles in the first term from one who does not.

Residence usually works well when

  • The child already handles some independence and enjoys other children's company.
  • A daily commute is eating hours that should go to study, sport or sleep.
  • A parent is posted outside Uttarakhand, or the family moves often, and the child needs one school and one syllabus for several years.
  • Parent and child have talked it through and reach the same answer without persuasion.

Wait, or choose a day place, when

  • The move is being driven by a difficult patch at home. A change of address rarely settles what has not been settled.
  • The hope is that residence will correct behaviour the family has not managed to address. A school shares that work; it cannot take it over.
  • Only one of parent and child is convinced, and the other is being talked round.
  • The fee would stretch the household to the point where a mid-year change becomes likely. Children carry the cost of that.

Because the school teaches from Nursery upwards, families in and around Dehradun have a middle path: join as a day scholar and move into residence later. The published 2026-27 day-school schedule lists one-time charges of ₹ 30,000 (₹ 2,500 registration and ₹ 27,500 admission). Ask the transport office to confirm current route availability and arrangements for your address.

What the school takes on

Use these areas as a checklist and verify the current residential-care arrangements before enrolment.

Adults who know the child

Meet the current residential staff and ask who is on duty, how welfare concerns are recorded and when parents are contacted. See pastoral care.

Medical response to verify

Ask who provides first response during boarding hours, how medicines and incidents are recorded, how parents are contacted and which emergency-referral process currently applies.

Counsellor and learning support

The May 2026 staff list includes a counsellor/wellness teacher and a special educator. Ask how students access current support, what confidentiality limits apply and when parents are notified.

Published safety evidence

The school publishes fire, building, and water and sanitation certificates. Use the safety and security checklist to inspect current operational arrangements.

Child protection in writing

Ask to review the current written child-protection policy, designated reporting contacts, bullying response and cyber-safety programme.

Ways to stay in touch

Ask which diary, portal, messaging, email or app channels are currently official, and request the current parent-teacher meeting and review calendar.

How to visit and how to apply

No website settles a residential decision. Walk the campus with your child.

Ring 9997073777 or 7455997333, or write to admissions@doonglobalschool.edu.in, and the office will arrange a visit. Bring your child; their reaction tells you a good deal. Ask directly about what no page can answer in the abstract: how the day is structured for your child's age group, dining and laundry, how families keep in touch and what a new boarder should bring. Those arrangements are reviewed each year and are best heard from the people who run them.

Admission then follows six steps: inquiry, document submission, an entrance assessment for Grade I and above, an interaction with the Principal, fee payment and orientation. Keep these ready:

  • Application form with photographs
  • Birth certificate
  • Previous report card and transfer certificate
  • Identity and address documents accepted by admissions (Aadhaar is optional)
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Caste certificate and special-needs documentation, where applicable

Each stage is set out on the admissions page. If you are still comparing residential schools in Dehradun, put the same questions to every campus on your list and compare the answers rather than the brochures.
