1. Board and affiliation status

CBSE, ICSE, a state board or an international curriculum all lead somewhere different. Ask for the affiliation number and school code, and check that the affiliation covers the senior secondary stage if your child is heading for Class XII. 2. Day, boarding or both

A school that runs only day classes cannot take a boarder later. If there is any chance your circumstances will change during your child's schooling, a campus offering both keeps the option open without a change of school.

3. Faculty strength and qualifications

4. Safety, transport and pastoral care

Look for CCTV coverage with actual monitoring, controlled entry, fire equipment and drills, an infirmary with a trained nurse, and a written child protection policy with a named officer. For buses, ask about GPS tracking, speed governors and whether a female attendant travels on every route.

5. Facilities that are genuinely used

Laboratories, a library, sports grounds and activity spaces matter only if they appear on the timetable. On a visit, ask how many periods a week a Class VIII student spends in a laboratory, and who coaches the sport.

6. The full cost, not the headline fee

Ask for one-time charges, term or annual tuition, transport, and what books and uniform come to. Ask which part of the deposit is refundable. Then ask what scholarships exist - merit, sport, need-based and sibling concessions can change the arithmetic considerably for a family with two children in school.

7. Admission process and how parents are kept informed

A clear admission sequence, published document requirements and a current-session calendar of parent meetings tell you a good deal about how a school is run. Ask which official channel the school uses for routine updates, academic progress and urgent messages.

Most of what a prospectus says about a CBSE school is already a matter of record. Every affiliated school has to publish a mandatory disclosure, and it is the single most useful document a parent can read before signing anything.

Affiliation number and school code - confirm the school is affiliated for the stage you need
Land area and number of classrooms, with the size of each in square metres
Number of laboratories, library provision and internet facility
Teacher count broken into PGT, TGT and PRT, plus special educator and counsellor
Toilet provision for girls and boys, and drinking water arrangements
Fee structure, transfer certificate procedure and grievance contacts

Teaching is staged rather than uniform. Nursery to Class V is activity based; Classes VI to VIII move to subject specialists and laboratory work; Classes IX and X focus on board preparation; and Classes XI and XII split into the four listed streams, subject to current eligibility and availability. Assessment follows the current CBSE scheme. Ask which Olympiad and competitive-examination support is offered for the current session.
